Choi and Lee Earn Top 5 Finishes with Volvik at LPGA Major
Two Volvik Staff Players Finish in Top 5 of Major KPMG Women's PGA Championship
Two Volvik staff players finished in the Top 5 at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club Sunday. The 63rd Women’s PGA is the second major of the 2017 season on the LPGA Tour and is being organized by the PGA of America for the 3rd year.
Chella Choi and Mi Hyang Lee, both players of Volvik golf balls since 2012, experienced their best ever finishes in a LPGA Tour major.
Choi, who held the share of the lead after the third round of the event, finished in 3rd place. She played her signature Orange S3 tour premium golf ball, leading to major exposure for Volvik on the Golf Channel and NBC telecasts. The 3rd place finish was Choi’s fifth Top 10 in a major on the LPGA Tour since switching to Volvik golf balls.
“Unlike any other golf ball, any time a color golf ball is in play in a huge event like this, it moves the needle for us,” said National Director of Sales and Marketing, Jon Claffey. “We’re still breaking some golfers into the idea that color has many more benefits to their game and when they see it proven over and over again on the worlds pro tours, it resonates. Chella’s performance this week with our Orange golf ball led to our 4th highest web site traffic of the year, only following the day we announced we had signed Bubba Watson, and the Thursday of the Waste Management Open and the Thursday of the Masters when Bubba played a Pink Volvik S4 golf ball to a live national audience.”
Choi wasn’t the only Volvik staff player to finish in the Top 5. Fellow staffer Mi Hyang Lee, who also used to play an Orange S3, but this year has moved on to playing a White/Blue Pearl version of the popular model, finished right behind her mentor and best friend Choi with a T4 finish.
Lee tied for 2nd lowest round of the day on Sunday with to maneuver into the Top 5. The finish ties her best finish in a major, equaling a T4 finish at The Evian Championship in 2015. It was her 3rd Top 10 in an LPGA Tour major, all with Volvik golf balls in play.
Both players moved up the rankings on the LPGA Tour, with Choi earning $233,911 and Lee earning $148,585 for their finishes. Choi now ranks 18th and Lee jumped up to 29th on the official LPGA Tour money list.
Choi and Lee are the only players in LPGA tour history to win events with Orange golf balls. Lee did so in 2014 at the Mizuno Classic when she won her first and only LPGA title with her Orange S3 golf ball. Choi followed the next year at the Marathon Classic when she also secured her first LPGA title with an Orange S3.
Choi resides in Jacksonville, FL, while Lee lives in Columbia, South Carolina
