Closer Look: Bubba’s Stats as He Plays European Tour in China This Week
Bubba Watson is eight events in on the 2017 PGA TOUR schedule playing his new Volvik golf ball, switching between Green, Pink and White, and is playing in Shenzhen International this week in a European Tour event being held in China.
Watson finished tied for 29th in the inaugural tournament at Genzon Golf Course in 2015 and placed eighth last year at the event.
So far on the season, Watson is averaging 305.9 yards in measured drives driving distance and his driving accuracy has jumped up 7.5% from 55% accuracy to 62% with his new S4 4-piece golf ball known for its accuracy.
Watson ranks #2 on the PGA TOUR in driving distance (all drives) with all 240 of his drives this season.
He ranks #2 on the tour in percentage of drives measuring over 320 yards (85/240 or 35% have been over 320) and also ranks #2 in percentage of drives measuring over 300 yards plus (131/240 or 54%).
Watson has registered 11 drives over 360 yards this season, meaning that he has 11 of the longest 200 hits on the PGA TOUR so far this year.
Watson now ranks 5th on the PGA TOUR in Shots Gained: Off The Tee, which measures player performance off the tee on all par-4s and par-5s. Strokes gained is a better method for measuring performance because it compares a player's performance to the rest of the field and because it can isolate individual aspects of the game.
Watson is feeling confident entering the Shenzhen International.
"My putting is coming around, my ball striking has been better," Watson told a pre-tournament press conference in China on Tuesday. "If you look at old scores you always think you can do better but I know I'm on the right path with what we are working on, so I'm looking forward to getting out there.
