Katie Kempter Wins 3rd Annual Volvik Championship

Katie Kempter Wins Volvik Championship on Symetra Tour, 3rd Annual Event Provides Big Exposure for Volvik

BEAUMONT, Calif. - Symetra Tour player Katie Kempter won the third annual Volvik Championship Sunday after birdies on the final three holes and surviving two playoff holes at Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon this past Sunday. The victory was Kempter’s first ever professional victory.

It was a cold Southern California day with temperatures in the low-40’s, a steady light rain and winds reaching 20 miles-per-hour. Kempter and Ginger Howard were the only two players that turned in a score under par in the final round. Kempter earns the winner’s check of $15,000 and moves into second place on the Volvik Race for the Card money list after two events with a total of $15,291.

“It is a little surreal,” said the 27-year-old Kempter. “I didn’t know what to think when I realized I won, but this is very special.”

Kempter was at 2-under after a bogey on the 15th hole, three shots back of Lee Lopez. She made birdie on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to get to 5-under. Lopez was in the fairway on the 18th hole playing in the final group with a one shot lead, but made bogey. Both players made par on the first playoff hole. On the second playoff hole, Kempter saved a tough up and down from the back left of the green for par while Lopez lipped out a short par putt.

“You never want to see someone lip out to decide the outcome,” said Kempter. “I was like ‘oh my gosh, this actually happened’. Everything I worked for and everything I am doing with my coach and my family and to continue to chase that dream (LPGA) is amazing. To see this dream come true is great.”

Volvik had 11 professionals using their golf balls at the Volvik Championship. Volvik Ambassador Stephanie Kono earned her second Top 10 in two events on the young season. She eagled the 14th hole with a hole-out from 131 yards in the windy conditions with her Volvik S3 golf ball. Volvik staffer Becca Huffer aced the 17th hole at Tukwet Canyon Saturday with her Pink S3 golf ball.

Volvik is the official golf ball of the Symetra Tour and is also the sponsor of the Volvik Race for the Card, where the Top 10 players on the Symetra Tour money list earn their LPGA Tour cards for the following season. At every Symetra Tour event, the driving range is covered in Volvik's colorful high-performance 3-piece and 4-piece golf balls for all Symetra Tour players to practice with. Volvik hosted a Volvik Race for the Card party Tuesday night at Morongo Casino complete with a DJ, a Volvik Race for the Card logo made up of 1,484 Volvik golf balls, Volvik ice sculptures, Volvik golf ball cake pops, Symetra Tour highlight reels and an epic dance off between Symetra Tour players. The week also featured two jam packed days of ProAms hosting Volvik’s top customers from Southern California.

"This year at the Volvik Championship we not only continued to raise the bar and bring an LPGA Tour type feel to our event, we were also able to garner a large amount of exposure for Volvik in the Southern California market," said Don Shin, President of Volvik USA. "From the Volvik billboard on I-10 and the Morongo Casino Volvik Championship branded keys to the many television and radio features done on the event, Volvik and the Symetra Tour were able to tell the story of these amazing professionals who are the future of the women’s game in a much bigger light. It was a great week for all involved and for the third time at the Volvik Championship, we had a first time winner.  Congratulations to Katie Kempter and her parents who were there to witness the hard fought victory.”

The Symetra Tour is off for the next three weeks before the Florida swing begins with the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic at Lake Wales Country Club in Lake Wales, Florida March 27-29.
