INTEREST in colored golf balls—once a non-starter for most players—remains surprisingly high, according to a recent report from Golf Datatech. In its summer 2013 study of attitudes and usage, the research firm found 47 percent of golfers were “interested” in playing a colored ball (down from last summer’s high of 49 percent but still a 27 percent gain from the spring 2012 survey). Interest was consistent across all handicaps. “We’ve seen a sea change in the usage of colored golf balls, and this is mostly with men,” says Jon Claffey, head of marketing of Volvik, which sells the yellow Vista ball used by Ilhee Lee to win the LPGA Tour’s Pure Silk Bahamas Classic in May. Still, not everyone is enthralled. The study found only 5 percent of players 40 and younger were “very interested” in playing colored golf balls. —Mike Stachura
